Clean Carpets DO Improve Indoor Air Quality!

Improving indoor air quality (IAQ) by cleaning carpets involves removing dust, allergens, pathogens, and other contaminants trapped in carpet.

Because carpets can harbour particles that affect IAQ, here are some effective methods to clean carpets for better air quality:

  • Regular Vacuuming: Regular Vacuuming with a High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter can trap small particles (e.g., dust, pollen) that are usually recirculated back into the air by standard vacuums.
  • Deep Cleaning with Hot Water Extraction (Steam Cleaning): This method involves injecting hot water into the carpet and then extracting it, along with dirt and contaminants. It helps to kill bacteria and mould.
  • Professional Services: Professional carpet cleaners often have more powerful equipment, which leads to better results in reducing indoor pollutants.
  • Spot Cleaning: Address spills immediately to prevent mould or bacteria from forming, and avoid over-wetting the carpet, as excessive moisture can also lead to mould growth, which negatively affects IAQ.
  • Use Entrance Mats: Reduce dust and allergens using entrance mats to reduce dirt and debris tracked in, consider removing shoes indoors.
  • Control humidity: Installing a heat pump, ventilation system, or just opening windows & doors in the home prevents dust mites and bacterial/fungicidal contaminants, which thrive in moist/damp environments.
