Understanding the role of jets in Hot Water Extraction cleaning…

When you apply chemicals with pressure through your Hot Water Extraction machine, be it Truckmount or Portable, a consistent spray pattern is extremely important.

Worn jets or nozzles reduce cleaning performance by diminishing fan width, resulting in over-wetting and streaking. As a professional cleaner, a quick check on the pattern of the jets every time you clean is a great idea.

Both stainless steel and brass jets on cleaning equipment or sprayers should be checked regularly when used in daily cleaning operations. This is a small price to pay for knowing your equipment is helping you to do the quality job that your customer expects.

Jet Types

  • The predominant nozzles in carpet cleaning are the Tee Jet and the Vee Jet.
  • The Tee Jet has a flat surface on the bottom that seats against the surface of the tool and is held secure by a screw-on cap that fits over the jet and threads to the tool.
  • The Vee Jet is itself threaded and screws directly onto the tool.
  • Both types come in brass or stainless steel. Brass is less expensive, but stainless steel is more durable.

Jet Size

  • Jet size usually refers to the spray orifice and the fan pattern of a certain angle.
  • Orifice size and spray pattern can be determined by reading the number next to the orifice on the jet.
  • The first part of the number indicates the width of the fan pattern measured in degrees and the second part of the number indicates the size of the orifice. For example, if the jet says 8001, then it has an 80-degree pattern and a 01 opening. If a jet says “11002”, it has a 110-degree fan pattern and a 02 opening.
  • The best explanation for orifice size is that a #2 opening is twice as big as a #1 opening, while a #6 opening is three times the size of a #2 opening.
  • A wand that has three # 2 jets will allow the same water flow as a wand with a single jet with a #6 opening if the water is delivered to the jets at the same pressure.

Always keep new extra jets for your machines and sprayers with you in case of blockage and visually checking used jets against new will indicate levels of wear. Regular checking and replacement of jets will ensure correct solution application and customer satisfaction.
