National Invasive Ants Programme

Red Imported Fire Ant (Solenopsis Invicta) 
- Reddish-brown color, 3–6mm in size, some with shiny black abdomens.
- Aggressive stinging behavior can disrupt agriculture and natural environments.
- Nests are mounded, up to 40cm high, in sunny areas.
- Sting causes intense burning, itching, and blistering; seek medical help for allergic reactions.
Tropical Fire Ant (Solenopsis geminata) 
- Orange-brown body, 3–6mm in length, similar to red imported fire ant.
- Inflicts painful stings and swarms aggressively when disturbed.
- Prefers open sunny areas for nesting, often near heat sources.
- Sting can cause intense burning and allergic reactions; seek medical attention if symptoms develop.
Little Fire Ant (Wasmannia auropunctata) 
- Tiny, 1.5mm long, reddish to golden brown.
- Disrupts agriculture and recreational activities with aggressive stinging.
- Nests in twigs, leaf litter, and trees, making eradication difficult.
- Sting is usually harmless, but can be painful and itchy for up to three days.
Carpenter Ant (Camponotus sp.) 
- Large ants, up to 13mm long, dark to rusty orange in color.
- A major urban pest known for chewing wood and leaving sawdust.
- Generalist hunters and scavengers, collecting nectar and protecting honeydew-producing insects.
- Inflicts painful bites.
Singapore Ant (Monomorium destructor) 
- Two-toned, orange thorax and dark abdomen, 1.8-3.5mm in length.
- Major urban pest that damages fabric, rubber goods, and insulation.
- Forms large colonies with multiple queens, nesting inside and outside buildings.
- Can inflict painful bites.
Crazy Ant (Paratrechina longicornis)
- Dark brown to black, 2.5-3mm in size, with long legs and antennae.
- Protects sap-sucking insects, potentially disrupting the ecosystem.
- Nests in warm places, including inside buildings and under debris.
- May bite if provoked.
Ghost Ant (Tapinoma melanocephalum) 
- Tiny, 1.5 to 2mm long, with a dark head and pale abdomen.
- Serious household nuisance, foraging for sweet foods in large numbers.
- Quick, erratic movements when disturbed; emits a coconut-like odor when crushed.
- No sting or bite.
Yellow Crazy Ant (Anoplolepis gracilipes) 
- Pale-yellow color, 4–5mm in length, with long legs and antennae.
- Major agricultural and environmental pest, protecting sap-sucking insects.
- Nests at the base of trees and plants, and can occupy houses.
- Does not sting but may spray formic acid, causing localized irritation.
