Odour Removal; A comparison between Ozone and Hydroxyl…

Ozone and Hydroxyl generators operate using different mechanisms and have distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Ozone (O3) Generators

Ozone generators create ozone, a highly reactive molecule with three oxygen atoms. Ozone reacts with airborne pollutants, including odours, by breaking down their molecular structure. This makes ozone effective at neutralizing strong odours from smoke, mould, pet smells, and other contaminants including VOCs.

  • Powerful Odor Removal: Ozone is highly effective at neutralizing even the most stubborn odours.
  • Penetrates Deep: Ozone can permeate carpets, fabrics, and other porous materials, reaching embedded odours.
  • Kills Bacteria and Mould: Ozone can eliminate bacteria, viruses & mould that cause odours, providing additional sanitation, health and indoor air quality benefits.
  • Toxicity: Ozone is harmful to humans and pets when inhaled in high concentrations. Spaces treated with ozone must be evacuated during treatment and for some time afterward to allow the ozone to dissipate.
  • Unsafe for Continuous Use: Ozone generators cannot be used in occupied spaces, so it’s only suitable for short-term use.
  • Material Damage: Prolonged or excessive exposure to ozone can degrade materials like rubber, fabrics, and some plastics.

Ozone Generators are ideal for quick, deep odour removal (e.g., smoke, mould) and are best suited to unoccupied spaces due to their toxicity during operation.

For more extreme or stubborn odours in unoccupied areas, ozone generators may offer faster and more robust results, though with the need for caution due to its harmful effects during treatment.

Hydroxyl (OH) Generators

Hydroxyl generators use UV light to create hydroxyl radicals (OH), which are naturally occurring molecules in the atmosphere that break down pollutants and odours. These hydroxyl radicals react with odour-causing compounds, breaking them down into harmless substances like water and carbon dioxide.

  • Safe for Occupied Spaces: Hydroxyl generators can be safely used in spaces where people, pets, and plants are present, as they do not produce harmful emissions.
  • Continuous Operation: Since it’s safe for humans and animals, hydroxyl generators can run continuously without evacuating the area.
  • Non-Damaging: Hydroxyl radicals don’t damage materials like ozone does, so it’s safe for use around electronics, fabrics, and other sensitive materials.
  • Effective for Organic Odors: Great for removing odours from organic sources such as smoke, pets, food and mould.
  • Slower Process: Hydroxyl generators work more slowly than ozone generators, so they may take longer to eliminate strong, embedded odours.
  • Less Potent for Certain Odors: While hydroxyl generators are effective for organic odours, they may not be as efficient as ozone in eliminating very strong, deep odours from sources like heavy smoke or fire damage.

Hydroxyl Generators are best for safe, continuous odour removal in occupied areas, and ideal for gradual and non-invasive odour control, particularly in homes or offices with pets and people.

If the area is frequently occupied or you’re looking for long-term use, hydroxyl is the better choice due to its safety profile.
