Two different fibres, two different strategies

Polyester (PET) doesn’t hold crimp well. To compensate, modern PET carpet yarns rely on modified, often multi-lobal, cross-sections that give the fibre structural bulk, combined with higher filament counts for denser coverage and better soil-hiding.

Triexta (PTT) takes a different route to resilience. Its three-carbon glycol backbone gives the polymer a natural zigzag structure with inherent elastic recovery. Triexta is partly plant-based (marketed globally under names like Sorona) and is sold in New Zealand as Rhino Strand, Smart Strand, and Eco Strand offering durability, pet and family-friendly options with built-in stain resistance.

Why these carpets need a different maintenance approach

The fine denier and high filament density that give PET and Triexta their soft, dense feel also work against easy cleaning. That density roughly doubles to quadruples the total fibre surface area compared with older polyester constructions, giving oily soils far more surface to cling to, while packing the pile tightly enough to make embedded soil hard to reach.

A few common tools fall short here:

  • Standard vacuum heads can seal against the dense pile or lack the airflow to lift embedded soil.
  • Aggressive beater bars set too low risk damaging fine filaments rather than lifting debris.
  • Soft-bristle or vented heads are gentler but often don’t generate enough lift for deeply embedded particulate.

In practice, low-moisture systems using counter-rotating brush (CRB) agitation, paired with strong vacuum recovery, tend to be the most reliable way to work agitation and preconditioning agents down to the base of the yarn without harming the fibre. Agitation matters more than ever

CRB machine agitating carpet during triexta carpet cleaning, office corridorBecause of the density and the stronger emulsifiers now needed for oleophilic (oil-loving) soils, mechanical agitation carries more of the cleaning workload than it used to. Chemistry on its own isn’t enough — triexta carpet cleaning requires preconditioning agents that need to be worked down to the base of the yarn bundle to release absorbed oils. CRB systems distribute prespray evenly through dense pile and reach that base layer more effectively than wand agitation alone. IICRC S100 — the standard most NZ carpet cleaning technicians already train to — puts real emphasis on thorough soil suspension before extraction, and that’s doubly true with these fibres.


Dealing with absorbed oils, not just surface soil

Once soil is properly suspended, there’s a second challenge specific to PET and triexta: both fibres absorb oils into the fibre itself, not just onto the surface. Surfactants only emulsify surface oil — absorbed oil needs a different mechanism entirely. There are really only two ways to shift it:

  1. Dissolving it, using a solvent-based prespray that breaks the oil down so it can be rinsed away during hot water extraction. This is highly effective, particularly on oils that have had time to soak in — but the VOC content of solvent-based products can be a real consideration in hospitality sites, healthcare facilities, or homes with chemically sensitive occupants.
  2. Absorbing it, using a dry compound with a stronger attraction to oil than the fibre has. This transfers the absorbed oil out of the fibre and into the cleaning media, avoiding VOC concerns while still tackling the problem at its source.

The practical checklist

Today’s polyester and triexta carpets are engineered fibres that respond well to the right process. Getting good, lasting results comes down to four things:

  • The right chemistry for absorbed oleophilic soil — solvent-based or dry compound, depending on the site.
  • Thorough but controlled agitation (CRB rather than an overly aggressive beater bar) that reaches the base of the pile without damaging fine filaments.
  • Controlled extraction, so cleaning product doesn’t sit in the pile.
  • Fast drying, to limit wicking and resoiling risk.

Get those four right, and the old complaints about polyester and triexta — rapid resoiling, matting, that “flat” look within a year — become less of an issue, however they will re-appear depending on traffic – so refer your client(s) back to the retailer for warranty enquiries.
