Step-by-Step Guide to Changing the Oil on a VANGUARD Engine

(Video transcript summarised)

1. Preparation:

  • Gather Supplies: Ensure you have the following tools and supplies ready:

    • A clean rag (for wiping and cleaning)

    • A container to catch the oil

    • Two spanners (for loosening the oil cap)

    • An oil filter wrench (available from most automotive retailers)

    • A plastic bag (for handling the oil filter)

    • New oil filter (OEM recommended for warranty purposes)

    • Fresh engine oil (check the required volume for your engine)

    • A funnel for pouring oil

    • A dipstick for oil level check

2. Draining the Old Oil:

  • Warm the Engine: Run the engine for a few minutes until it’s warm, or perform the oil change at the end of the day when the engine is already warm.

  • Remove the Oil Cap: Use two spanners to undo the oil filler cap. Place the cap in a secure spot.

  • Drain the Oil: Position the oil container beneath the drain plug, then allow the oil to drain completely for about 5 minutes.

3. Refit the Oil Cap:

  • Once the oil has drained, replace the oil cap onto the hose and secure it.

4. Remove the Oil Filter:

  • Prepare for Filter Removal: Place a plastic bag over the oil filter to contain any oil that may spill.

  • Loosen the Oil Filter: Using your oil filter wrench, unscrew the filter. Keep it inside the plastic bag to contain the remaining oil.

  • Clean the Area: Use a rag to wipe away any excess oil around the filter area.

5. Install the New Oil Filter:

  • Lubricate the New Oil Filter Seal: Apply a small amount of new oil to the rubber seal of the new oil filter.

  • Screw the Filter On: Hand-tighten the new filter onto the filter housing, ensuring it is secure, but do not over-tighten.

  • Wipe Clean: Use the rag to clean any oil residue around the filter.

6. Add New Oil:

  • Remove the Oil Filler Cap: Locate the oil filler cap and remove it.

  • Pour in Fresh Oil: Use a funnel to pour the required amount of oil into the engine. Pour slowly to avoid spillage. Allow the oil to drain to the bottom of the engine, which may take a few seconds.

  • Reattach the Oil Filler Cap.

7. Check the Oil Level:

  • Check the Oil Level: Remove the dipstick, wipe it clean, then insert it back into the tube. Remove it again to check the oil level. The oil should be within the indicated range on the dipstick.

  • Run the Engine: Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes to allow the oil to circulate properly.

  • Recheck the Oil Level: After turning off the engine, wait for a moment and recheck the oil level using the dipstick. Add more oil if necessary.

8. Clean Up:

  • Dispose of the used oil and filter according to your local regulations.

  • Clean the area around the engine and tidy up your tools.
